Braves pin hopes on Hampton against San Fran

08/16/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Mike Hampton has won just one game in the major leagues over the last three years, but that victory came at the expense of the San Francisco Giants. The injury-riddled pitcher will try to repeat recent history when he takes the mound for the Atlanta Braves in tonight's second test of a three-game series with the visiting Giants.

Hampton held San Francisco to two runs and four hits over seven innings on August 5 at AT&T Park, the left-hander's first win since August 14, 2005. The two-time All-Star missed the entire 2006 and 2007 campaigns, as well as the first half of this season, due to an assortment of injuries that included reconstructive elbow surgery.

The 35-year-old failed to duplicate that strong effort Sunday at Arizona, where he was tagged for six runs in just four innings of a 6-1 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Succeeding against the Giants has been nothing new for Hampton over the course of his up-and-down career. He's faced San Francisco 25 times (22 starts) and amassed an outstanding 14-4 record to go along with a 3.61 earned run average.

Hampton will also be attempting to halt a five-game losing streak for Atlanta, which was dealt a 5-1 setback by the Giants in Friday's opener.

Matt Cain (8-9) shut down the Braves' offense for the second time this month, as the San Francisco hurler yielded just one run and six hits over the first seven innings. Cain also defeated Atlanta with 6 2/3 frames of one-run ball on August 4.

The young right-hander received plenty of support from Randy Winn and Bengie Molina, each of whom collected four hits and knocked in two runs to help the Giants snap a four-game skid.

Jair Jurrjens (11-8) pitched well in a losing cause for the Braves, who dropped a season-high six in a row between June 6-12. The rookie tossed seven innings and gave up just a pair of runs while striking out a career-best nine batters.

Tonight's tilt will be a rematch of the mound matchup from that August 5 game, with Jonathan Sanchez opposing Hampton once again. The hard-throwing lefty took the loss that night after yielding surrendering runs in five innings of work.

Sanchez tasted defeat once again this past Monday in Los Angeles, even though he limited the Dodgers to two runs and five hits over seven frames. The 25- year-old has now lost four straight starts and five consecutive decisions following his most recent victory, which came on June 29.

Moreover, the Giants have lost every one of Sanchez's seven outings since he last posted a win.

Sanchez is 0-2 with a 7.04 ERA over three lifetime appearances against Atlanta, with the August 5th matchup the only start of that bunch.

The Giants won two of three meetings with the Braves in San Francisco from August 4-6 and are 4-1 over their last five overall matchups with Atlanta. However, the club hasn't taken a series at Turner Field since the 1997 season.
