Welker sustained a left knee injury on New England's first possession during Sunday's loss at Houston. According to the Boston Globe, Welker tore the ACL and MCL ligaments in the knee.

The newspaper described the injury as similar to that of quarterback Tom Brady, who was hit in the knee by Kansas City's Bernard Pollard in Week 1 of the 2008 season and missed the rest of the campaign.

Losing Welker is a devasting blow to the AFC East champs on the eve of the postseason. He finished the season with an NFL-best and career-high 123 catches for 1,348 yards and four touchdowns.

New England hosts Baltimore Sunday in the wild card round of the playoffs.

So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.

In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.

The establishment of the pointspread as the corner stone around which team sports like football can be wagered upon was truly what brought gridiron betting into the stratosphere for online football betting .

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. Arizona charged out of the gates and built a 24-6 halftime lead that had the Eagles venerable defense reeling. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.

Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.
