A switch-hitter, the 21-year-old Smoak batted .383 with 23 home runs, 72 RBI and 63 runs scored as a junior for South Carolina last season. Smoak was MVP of the Raleigh Regional of the 2008 NCAA Tournament after batting .467 with two home runs and six RBI.

The first baseman also posted a .993 career fielding percentage, committing just 12 errors.
