Tottenham's Berbatov hands in transfer request

The 27-year-old Bulgaria international is rumored to be growing tired that a transfer to Old Trafford is proving hard to complete and has taken action to try and force a breakthrough.

A source close to Berbatov told The Sun: "Dimi's decided to put in a transfer request. He can't wait to go to Old Trafford and play for United.

"He feels he behaved professionally throughout this period. He has never spoken publicly on the situation out of respect for Tottenham.

"But he does not want to miss out on the start of United's season and he feels that this was his only option left."

Berbatov has scored 46 goals in two seasons at White Hart Lane, having moved to England from Bayer Leverkusen for $22 million in the summer of 2006.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had earlier hinted that he hoped to be able to seal a major deal in the next couple of days.

Ferguson had told reporters on Friday afternoon: "You might be surprised at what is going to happen over the next two days."
